History
Citizens
Interested in Arts, Inc. (CIA) is a nonprofit organization
committed to preserving the visual and performing arts in South
Florida, and is organized solely for the purpose of providing
grants to qualified members of the South Florida artistic
community. In 1997, a
small group of South Florida residents met to discuss how they
could support local arts organizations and individual
artists. As a result, Citizens Interested in Arts, Inc.,
was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
CIA awarded
its first grant in 1998 to two aspiring opera singers from
Miami's New World School of Arts. With CIA's
encouragement, the young tenor went on to perform with the
Florida Grand Opera, Young Artists Group.
In 1999 a
grant was awarded to the newly formed Maximum Dance
Company. CIA continues its support to this day.
Citizens
Interested in Arts, Inc. is still growing and currently
boasts some 150 members who are passionate in their desire to
strengthen the local diverse and vibrant arts and cultural
community. Luncheon meetings are held regularly on the
second Wednesday of each month from October to May and often,
grant recipients are invited to perform.
Funds are
raised from annual membership dues and special events, including
artistic performances.
